Right to Repair

right to repair

We don't have legislation like this in Canada as of yet, but really, besides putting more money in to the pockets of OEM's people should have the right to repair.  Not only does this limit the amount of refuse in landfills, but it's about time that we, the people, the consumers who vote ever god-damned day with the almighty dollar, ensure corporate responsibility.  Not not manufacture junk.  To take back hazardous waist that is contained in their products, and just maybe, they will reform their supply lines rather than cry the fact that it 'costs too much.'  Paying $750 for a motherboard replacement on a laptop that costs $1200 for a $0.17 part that went the way of the dodo bird is what costs too much!

Chrome Remote Desktop w/ Ubuntu 14.04

Upon enabling Chrome Remote Desktop on a remote computer that I might need to covertly access from time to time, and having it's physical location in more than less PITA location, I opted for something quick and dirty.  Enter Chrome spyware. :D

Problem was, chrome would flash some window in 30 milliseconds and be gone.

This bug report details what I was experiencing, and the TL;DR version is summarized here.

Install the deb file, and now you should be able to generate pins from your Ubuntu computer.

I hope it works for you as well!

Personally, I use 'block by default' settings in Chrome.  A wee bit of a PITA indeed, but no where near as bad as ransomware!  chrome://chrome/settings/content ..and scroll down to 'Plug-ins'.

Windows 8 print driver unavailable

5/3/2015

I recently got a service call about Windows 8.x printer driver not being available for an individual's computer.  There's nothing more frustrating than having the latest and greatest only to find out that your printer is obsolete for no particular reason!

So, here is the successful workaround that was implemented...

- Download the appropriate 32 or 64 bit driver for Win7.
- When the download is completed, click Open Folder.
- Right-click the file name, then click Properties.
- Click the Compatibility tab.
- Click Change Settings for All Users.
- Check the box next to Run this Program in Compatibility Mode for:
- Using the drop-down menu select Windows 7.
- Click Apply, then click OK.
- Click OK.
- Right-click the driver file, then click Run as Administrator.

** The User Account Control window may appear, if so click Yes to start the installation and follow the prompts that appear to install the printer software and driver.
